Dear CITAMS Members,

I hope this message finds you well during what continues to be a chaotic and challenging time, albeit one with some reasons for hope. I am writing to you with a number of updates and calls for volunteers to support the work of the section. Most important among these is the call from Jeff Lane for section election nominations. I strongly encourage you consider nominating yourself or a willing section colleague to add their name to the ballot in the upcoming election cycle. Please feel free to be in touch if you have any questions or feedback.

Best,
Andrew Lindner
CITAMS Chair

[1] Call for Nominations
Dear CITAMS Colleagues,
Several CITAMS positions will open for the 2021 ASA election:
Chair Elect  (1-year term; followed by 1-year term as Chair and another 1-year term as Past Chair)
Secretary/Treasurer (2-year term)
Council Members (2-year term)
Nominations Committee (3-year term)
Please consider nominating yourself or another CITAMS member. Send your nominations to Jeff Lane (jeffrey.lane@rutgers.edumailto:jeffrey.lane@rutgers.edu).
I’m happy to answer any questions.
Looking forward to your nominations,
Jeff Lane

[2] Call for Service to Section

CITAMS has several opportunities for service by interested volunteers. We are seeking volunteers to serve on two ad hoc committees: a) the Membership Committee, charged with retaining and increasing section members, and b) a Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, charged with analyzing data about the identities of section leadership and award winners and assessing current section policies.

Additionally, we are seeking volunteers who are willing to contribute any aspect of the writing, editing, and/or design of the section newsletter.

If you are interested in serving in any of these ways, please contact Andrew Lindner (alindner@skidmore.edumailto:alindner@skidmore.edu).

[3] CITAMS sessions at ASA 2021
As you may have seen, ASA’s 2021 Annual Meeting will now be a virtual event. However, we are still planning a number of great opportunities to share your research and connect with other CITAMS members! As you will see in the official call for papers, in additional to our business meeting, we will have an open regular session on Digital Sociology (organized by Tim Recuber), an open regular session on Media Sociology (organized by Francesca Tripodi), and section roundtables (organized by Jenny Davis and Andrew Lindner). Any and all presenters at ASA 2021 will be eligible to submit to next year’s Special Issue of Information, Communication, & Society. We looking forward to receiving lots of great submissions!

[4] Call for Winter Newsletter Items
Please send any items for the winter newsletter to Tova Petto (tpetto@skidmore.edumailto:tpetto@skidmore.edu). These might include:

  1. Announcements about your recently published books, articles, chapters, special issues, and edited volumes (please include a full citation, abstract, and cover image, if available)

  2. Announcements about upcoming conferences, calls for papers, special issues

  3. Links to op-eds, works of public sociology, examples of activist scholarship/collaboration, or coverage of CITAMS members in the news

  4. Job, fellowship, and grant opportunities

  5. Descriptions and links to new data sets

[5] Pick Your Own Sponsorship
Have you heard about Pick Your Own Sponsorshiphttps://www.asanet.org/news-events/footnotes/sep-oct-nov-2020/whats-new/new-approach-dues-2021-when-we-pull-together-we-all-win? One in five members are participating. It’s a new approach to ASA membership renewal, which holds ASA dues steady at their 2020 level and provides members with the choice of (a) paying those dues, (b) taking a sponsorship, or (c) providing a sponsorship. Taking a sponsorship means opting to reduce one’s dues payment for 2021 by 10%, 20% or 30%. Giving a sponsorship means adding 10%, 20%, or 30% to one’s dues payment to support colleagues who are in more precarious financial situations. In the words of ASA’s 2021 President Aldon Morris, “When we pull together, we all win.”
